Jim Lampley at his best

By Matthew Aguilar

In honor of Jim Lampley, the Hall of Fame sportscaster who will be working the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga fight Saturday for PPV.com - his five greatest boxing calls.

1. "It happened. It happened!" (Nov. 5, 1994): For nine rounds in Las Vegas, IBF/WBA heavyweight champ Michael Moorer, 26, had bruised, pummeled and battered former champ George Foreman. Foreman's dream of becoming the oldest heavyweight champion at age 45 and winning the title 20 years after he lost it to Muhammad Ali would remain a dream. Then one right hand changed the course of boxing history and Lampley, who'd heard Foreman tell him all week that it would happen, informed the world that it indeed had.

2. "Mike Tyson has been knocked out." (Feb. 10, 1990): Heavyweight king Mike Tyson was in his ferocious prime, undefeated at 37-0 and thought invincible. So invincible that challenger James "Buster" Douglas was a hopeless 42-1 underdog and considered a mere road bump on Tyson's way to a proposed June showdown with Evander Holyfield. But the unthinkable unfolded in Tokyo, with a prepared Douglas dominating Tyson to score the biggest upset in sports history.

3. "Come on. Come on! Let's Fight!" (May 18, 2002): The boxing world suspected Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward would put on a good show when they met for the first time in Uncasville, CT. But no one could have imagined the violence that took place at Mohegan Sun Casino, as the two warriors pounded away in a way that stripped Lampley's call - and that of his esteemed broadcast partners Emanuel Steward and Larry Merchant - down to a hoarse, primal salute.

4. "And down goes Sumbu Kalambay, after a major league left inside by Nunn" (March 25, 1989). "Second To" Nunn, the IBF middleweight champ, was boxing's next big thing, a talented, undefeated lefty ready to be a Sugar Ray Leonard for the 90s. He was expected to get his toughest test from WBA counterpart Sumbu Kalambay, a talented, accomplished stylist. But when Nunn smashed Kalambay with one shot inside a round at the Las Vegas Hilton, the Californian's coronation as the next superstar was confirmed.

5. "And he's down again, and in serious trouble." (June 27, 1988). At his historic peak, undisputed heavyweight king Mike Tyson had only one legitimate challenge remaining, that of undefeated lineal champ Michael Spinks. After two long years of delays and boxing politics, the two undefeated giants met "Once and For All"  on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. It was over in 91 seconds after Tyson dumped Spinks for a second time, leaving no doubt as to the identity of boxing's baddest man.
