Ringside Seat to cease boxing publication
Bill Dettloff makes stunning announcement on Old Scribes Podcast
Ringside Seat: “It’s over.”
Ringside Seat, one of the few print magazines devoted to boxing, is ceasing publication. Editor-in-Chief Bill Dettloff made the announcement during his appearance on the Old Scribes Podcast this week with sports journalists George Willis and Matthew Aguilar.
The magazine, which features long-form writing with a classic old-school design, might have one more publication before closing operation.
“It’s done. There is no more Ringside Seat,” Dettloff said on Old Scribes. “I absolutely loved that gig. Having grown up reading those old magazines, to land at a place where I could be editor in chief at the kind of magazine I grew up reading, was a great, great opportunity. I loved every second of it. But it appears to be over.”
Does Vinny Paz belong in the HOF?
Dettloff, a newly inducted member of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, delivered the sad news during an otherwise upbeat appearance on Old Scribes. Dettloff, a writer at Ring Magazine for 15 years, also discussed his induction to the NJBHOF, why he doesn’t like to watch boxing movies, why Max Baer was a “scumbag,” a non-vote for Vinny Paz, and his new book Matthew Saad Muhammad: Miracle Man. The book details how he went from an abandoned child to the light heavyweight champion of the world.
There’s also a mention of the great Tippy Larkin you might enjoy, and Dettloff details how a picture of George Foreman motivated him to become a boxer/boxing writer.
Tippy Larkin -- career record 131-13-1 (57) ! - beating Billy Graham in 1947. If you watched the most recent "Old Scribes" podcast from @MatthewAguilar5 and @GWillisSports, you know why I'm posting this. (I think Larkin is the one with the big hair.)
